We’re officially one month into the school year, and the buzz of those first days has settled into a rhythm. The pencils are a little less sharp, the notebooks already show signs of wear, and the excitement of reuniting has shifted into the steady hum of daily learning. For me, this first month has been a whirlwind of energy, adjustment, and growth.
This year is unique because I’m serving in two roles — both as a classroom teacher and as a hybrid coach. In the classroom, I’ve been busy building relationships, learning my students’ quirks and strengths, and establishing a culture where they feel safe, valued, and ready to learn. At the same time, I’ve been working alongside colleagues, coaching them through challenges, sharing strategies, and supporting them in their goals. It’s been a juggling act, to say the least.
The first few weeks made it clear that balancing these two roles requires flexibility and stamina. Some days, my schedule feels like a marathon — teaching a lesson in the morning, shifting gears to a coaching conversation in the afternoon, then circling back to lesson prep in the evening. The to-do lists seem endless, and the coffee pot is definitely earning its keep.
But what I’ve noticed is how much these two roles complement each other. Being in the classroom keeps me rooted in the realities of teaching, which makes my coaching more authentic and practical. Coaching, in turn, challenges me to think about the bigger picture, reflect on my own practices, and bring fresh ideas back to my students. It’s a cycle that pushes me to grow on both fronts.
One month in, I can already see small victories: students settling into routines, colleagues trying new strategies, and a sense of momentum building across the school. It’s not always perfect — some days are long and some lessons fall flat — but the wins, big and small, remind me why I love this work.
As I look ahead, I’m embracing the balance of these dual roles, knowing the journey will be filled with challenges and growth. Here’s to keeping the momentum going, supporting students and teachers alike, and making this year one of connection, progress, and purpose.
