As an educator, summer is my season of exhale—a time to pause, reflect, and refill my cup. One of the ways I’ve been doing that this summer is by simply getting outside and soaking in the beauty of nature right here in Memphis.
Each day, I’ve committed to taking daily walks, moving my body, and reconnecting with the natural world. Whether I’m strolling down Riverside Drive, walking the trails along the Mississippi River, or just exploring my neighborhood, there’s something deeply grounding about the fresh air and open sky. It’s not about going far—it’s about being present. Exercising outdoors has become my reset button. The rhythm of my steps, the warmth of the sun on my skin, and the sounds of birds chirping—it all brings a sense of calm that I didn’t realize I needed. After a year of pouring energy into students, lesson plans, meetings, and more, nature has become my quiet place to recharge.
There’s so much beauty right here in Memphis, and summer gives us the gift of time to truly enjoy it. These walks have not only helped me stay active, but they’ve also helped clear my mind and spark new inspiration. Sometimes I come back from a walk with a fresh idea, a peaceful heart, or simply the satisfaction of having cared for myself that day.
If you’re an educator—or anyone—seeking a way to unwind this summer, I encourage you to step outside. Breathe deeply. Move your body. Let nature do its quiet, healing work. Because rest isn’t just about doing nothing. Sometimes, it’s about finding joy in something as simple as a walk.
